You are all probably very familiar with Channel 4’s hit cooking show: Come Dine With Me, and its hilarious commentary by TV presenter Dave Lamb. You can’t knock it.
Over the years the show’s popularity has skyrocketed, and as a result the programme has gone on to inspire many of its viewers to host their own ‘Come Dine With Me’ themed dinner party.
To help you with hosting your own dinner party, we’ve created a handy dinner party generator!

Preparation is everything.
With work, children and education to think about, organising your guests can be a nightmare – especially if you are planning to invite a large group to the party. We recommend involving no more than four teams in the game including yourself, as things can tend to get quite tricky with any more than that.
Search through your calendar and find a suitable date for everyone, whether it’s in the week or at the weekend, then devise a schedule. Try and ensure that all of your participants stick to it as best they can. Depending on the size of your group, it is probably better to leave a week between each meal so that each contestant has enough time to prepare for their evening.
Budgeting for the meal is vital; you’ll want to leave yourself enough time and money to round up all of the ingredients, party material and wine for a great night in. It’s also a good idea to keep a little bit extra hidden away should anything go wrong nearer the time. After all, being a bit cautious never hurt anybody.
If you are first up, take this opportunity to set the tone for the games over the coming weeks by sending out some fancy invites. Tie the theme of your party into the event or, if you are keeping it a secret, simply tease your guests with a little bit of info about the evening.
On the other hand, if you are not being particularly secretive, provide your invitees with enough information for them to arrive on time and with everything they need for the night, for example:
When posting invitations, you are advised to leave a week or two before the first event as this will allow your attendees sufficient time to respond and get ready for their own turn.
The invitations will also allow you to ask your guests if they have any likes, dislikes or allergies. You can then make sure you include this in your theme.
Choosing A Theme
The theme is quite possibly the most exciting element of the party.
Hopefully, you found the perfect theme for your party using our generator above. If you want to a different theme, that’s great; just remember that you should try and match it with what you are cooking and any entertainment or games if you’re planning this in.
Here are a few things to think about incorporating into your theme:
- Food and drink
There are so many themes that your options are endless!
When deciding on what to cook, it’s a good idea to stick to what you know: whether it’s certain cooking methods, recipes or ingredients, only cook what you are really good at. It is a competition, after all.
Have a plan of action:
- How many courses will there be?
- How much time between each course?
- Are all pots, pans and dishes ready?
Have all of the ingredients prepared and allow yourself plenty of time to cook so that you are not constantly in and out of the dining room when everybody arrives – besides, no one really likes waiting for their food, do they?
Ah, yes: the scoring system.
While there may not be a camera crew in the room or a swanky black cab waiting to take people home to score your meal, there are other alternatives.
There are lots of ways you could score each dinner party, including score cards and review forms. You could even film your guests’ answers on your phone. We’ve made it easy by creating a downloadable scoring form for you in our party generator!
Mark each course from 1 to 10 and store the responses in a safe place. No cheating.
Once everyone has hosted, tally up the scores, sort out the prizes and determine who is the best dinner party host.
But above all, have fun.
We hope you have enjoyed reading this post. If you have any examples of themes or meals you would use in your own Come Dine with Me dinner then head over to our Facebook or Twitter page and let us know.
