Brilliant Bacon: Your Guide To Celebrating Bacon Day

BaconLadies and gentlemen, one of the greatest days of the year is almost upon us, and we don’t mean Christmas, or Ovenu’s birthday.

We’re talking about September 1st, or to give it its proper name, International Bacon Day.

Dedicating a whole day to a popular meat product may seem a little gratuitous to some, but here at Ovenu we think a day filled with tasty bacon sounds absolutely sublime.

Bacon sometimes get a bit of bad rep for being quite fatty and high in salt content, but in actual fact it can be a great as part of a healthy diet if cooked properly. It’s really high in protein and low in carbs, making it excellent energy food.

Besides, if there’s any day where it’s okay to have a bite on bacon then it’s got to be International Bacon Day; which is why we’ve suggested 10 ways in which you can celebrate in style and enjoy the brilliance that is bacon:

Only consume bacon-related dishes all day

This should go without saying really, but everything you eat on bacon day should be bacon related. You could have bacon and eggs for breakfast, a BLT sandwich for lunch and a double bacon and cheese burger for dinner, with bacon braised salad on the side of course.

For a real treat, why not try cooking up a bacon buffet? Fill your kitchen with bacon related food for all to enjoy.

Wrap everything in bacon

It’s a well-known fact that bacon pretty much goes with everything. If you can’t think of a way to incorporate bacon into your meal, then the best possible solution is to wrap it round your food. Bacon wrapped asparagus is perfect with steak, and prawns wrapped in bacon make brilliant starters for a surf and turf meal.

Make Bacon Brownies

Brownies are delicious and so is bacon, therefore it makes sense that the two would go so well together. Celebrity cook Nigella Lawson has a fantastic recipe for mouth-watering streaky bacon brownies, it’s well worth trying out.

Try Bacon Ice Cream

It’s amazing that we live in world were something of this brilliance actually exist, but bacon ice cream is very real, and very tasty. Certain Burger King restaurants in America even experimented with serving bacon sundaes this time last year; delicious!

Eat Bacon Candy

For those with a sweet tooth, it’s time to rejoice – candied bacon exists, and can be made easily at home. Simply coat your bacon in brown sugar and cook to taste. It’s also available online as lollipops and candy necklaces, but we imagine they’re little bit harder to make yourself.

Drink Bacon Martinis

Yes bacon can also be used in drinks. Make your own bacon martinis by coating bacon in brown sugar baking until it’s just turning firm. Let it cool and harden.

To make the martini, mix three parts vodka with two parts brandy and add a splash of cider. Use the bacon to stir the martini and enjoy.

Book a trip to Baconfest BLT

There are festivals all over the world that celebrate bacon in all its brilliance. From the Great Canadian Bacon Festival held on Canada Day every year (July 1st) in Ontario to the so-called ‘largest bacon showcase in the world’ at the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival held annually in Iowa.

Clean your teeth with bacon

Believe it or not you can actually buy bacon flavoured dental floss from online stores. We can’t promise it’ll improve your breath but it’ll certainly leave a great taste in your mouth.

Knit a big bacon scarf

It might not be edible or all that fashionable, but it will keep you warm in the winter months, and it certainly makes a good talking point that’ll help identify other bacon lovers.

Cut your own bacon

If store-bought bacon is not your thing, why not try making your own bacon? You can source a pork belly joint from either your local supermarket or (preferably) your local butcher and cut the bacon strips at a size and thickness that suits you. Brilliant!
